Planning a wedding is, to say the least, an overwhelming endeavor. In order to successfully plan the wedding of your dreams, it’s important to be very organized when it comes to wedding planning. Getting started early and sticking to a checklist are important ways to avoid frustration or forgetting critical components. Glenn and I met at a mutual friends’ house one night 7 years ago. It was definitely love at first sight as we have never left each others’ side since and are still so blissfully happy as when we first met. Glenn proposed on Valentine’s Day 2007, 5 years later, at the Adelaide Botanical Gardens after a picnic lunch in lush surrounds with the background of flowing water. It was such a surprise and the most memorable experience of my life.

Within two months we were already discussing marriage, we were effectively “engaged to be engaged”! In March 2006 we shopped together for my engagement ring. Over the next four months, the ring nested safely in Nik’s possession whilst I was left pondering when and how he’d actually propose! On July 19 2006, Nik invited all of our family and friends along to our Flanagans gig. I was surprised and stunned when Nik begun strumming his guitar singing these words to the song he’d written.

We decided to have an autumn wedding, a year after Pierre proposed. I had dreamed of my wedding since I was a little girl so I was eager to start planning. I had in my mind the dress Ii always dreamed of, the typical princess dress. After a day of trying on wedding dresses, the last wedding dress I tried on was perfect, once I had it on I knew this was the dress. The wedding dress was embroidered with Swarovski crystals and had a train that was over a meter long. The Bridesmaids wore melon pink backless gowns embroidered with Swarovski crystals. The groomsmen wore light gray suits with a crisp white shoe which complimented the bridesmaids dresses. The whole theme I wanted for our wedding was classy, elegant and chic.

Our wedding ceremony was held at Latrobe Chapel in Paddington, Brisbane. It was a gorgeous little blue and white chapel, with wooden floors, red carpeted aisle and chandeliers. I was walked down the aisle by my big brother to see my amazing husband ….oh what a feeling!! The wedding ceremony was the best part of my day and I have never been as excited as I was at this moment. I wish we could do it all again in slow motion as it all happened so quickly.

I only had ten months to organize the wedding and I had to be well organized living so far away. The True Bride website and the Internet were excellent tools for locating suppliers. My mum and my 2 beautiful bridesmaids were an excellent help. Everything just seemed to fall into place. My bridemaids organized a girly weekend away in Gracetown, Western Australia the weekend prior to the wedding, full of massages, yoga and winery tours (I would highly recommend it, I was so relaxed on the big day).

Being the non-traditionalists that we are, we wanted to really develop an understanding between us as to what a wedding meant to us as a couple – and we came to the agreement that it was an opportunity for our close family and friends and Jono and myself to celebrate our love for one another and the relationship we have. Jono and I then decided to create a wedding that would incorporate this meaning, and I believe we successfully pulled it off with many guests saying it was one of the most ‘comfortable’ and ‘laid-back’ weddings they had ever attended.

Yes, you’ll likely pay more initially, although doing your own installation can certainly reduce that cost. But you’ll be reducing environmental damage to the planet, and you’ll also save money on your utility bills as fossil fuel expenses continue to escalate.

If you are a homeowner or business owner, consider putting solar on your property or buying clean energy through your utility.
